An integral part of our program is implementing family systems therapy (FST) in our treatment experience for clients and families, who are encouraged to partake in family groups and individual family sessions. Using FST, we study the family dynamics and each family members’ role. This assists all family members in helping them discover and deal with the root cause(s) of any negative behaviors that reinforce dysfunctional family patterns of engagement, and ultimately the addiction cycle. Addiction is a disease that affects the entire family, we believe that self-discovery and recovery is not only beneficial, but necessary for all family members.
As the name implies, family systems therapy is a branch of systems therapy. Systems therapy is a theory that studies parts of a system in relation to the whole. Each family member is considered a “part”, and the family is the “whole”. FST is founded upon the theory that people cannot be understood in isolation from their interpersonal relationships. In other words, in order to understand a person, you need to understand how they interact with their family unit – both past (as a child) and present (currently).
Many psychological issues begin early in life and are influenced to varying degrees by family dynamics. Every member of the family influences the overall dynamic of the family, and the overall dynamic of the family has an influence on every member of the family. This is why it is important to consider the addict’s role in their family and what role their family dynamics have played in their addiction. It is equally important to investigate any current family dynamics that need to be addressed with family members to support recovery for the family, as a whole.
Our licensed and experienced staff works with patients to explore their family dynamics. Our licensed therapists will work with patients and family members to discuss:
Because FST is such a broad area of study, it can be used to help patients and family members with a wide variety of problems in their life. As participants work with a therapist to undergo FST, they will:
