Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Ripple Ranch Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treatment

Patients at Shadow Mountain’s Ripple Ranch Recovery Center are helped using a wide variety of different treatment modalities. This helps us take a broad approach to fighting addiction and putting our patients on a sustainable path towards recovery. One of the most common therapy methods that we utilize is cognitive behavioral therapy (or CBT). Learn about how we use CBT to treat patients at our Texas treatment center, below!

What is CBT and How Does It Work?

CBT is a type of psychotherapy that is handled in a controlled environment with a mental health specialist, who conducts both one-on-one and group therapy sessions with our patients. The point of cognitive behavioral therapy is to address very specific negative patterns of thinking that influence your actions. Once you are able to identify those problematic thought patterns within yourself, you can take steps of meaningful action to reduce the impact that they have on your life, and replace them with positive modes of thought. CBT is a very practical way to approach a variety of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and addiction, among many others.

Providing CBT to Our Patients

We utilize cognitive behavioral therapy in a handful of different therapeutic settings. Here are the main types of therapy where our patients will encounter a session of CBT:

  • Individual Therapy: A counselor or therapist sits with a patient in a private setting where they can be honest about their emotions, thoughts, and reactions to certain triggers. Individual therapy is often an important baseline in CBT to make meaningful progress, since patients maybe more willing to open up in a one-on-one session.
  • Group Therapy: We host group therapy sessions with our patients that are led by one of our counselors. This peer-based method of therapy can be incredibly powerful in the use of CBT, because patients are able to see how their peers react to similar situations they have been in, and it enables them to look at these actions through an objective lens.
  • Family Therapy: Family therapy is a major part of Ripple Ranch’s recovery program. One of the most challenging, but rewarding components of CBT is when it is incorporated into family therapy, where different members of a family can honestly express emotions and make meaningful progress towards changing their behavior in an objective way.

Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy has become a crucial part of the world of mental health treatment. Most therapists, counselors, and other mental health specialists are trained in the application of CBT. Because of this, it has provided incredible results to individuals at addiction recovery centers. Here are some of the positive effects that we notice CBT has had on patients at Ripple Ranch Recovery Center:

  • Teaches skills to greatly reduce the risks and dangers of relapse.
  • Is a method of treatment that does not require medication.
  • Helps combat over emotional reactions, as well as deals with trauma, grief, and loss.
  • Provides a tangible step-by-step approach to combating mental illness and addiction triggers.
  • Can provide powerful tools to help heal and manage personal relationships.
  • Improves skills of self-reflection and emotion management, which gives greater perspective and control over one’s actions.
