Detox is ridding the body of substances to begin recovery. During detox, your body removes waste, additives, toxins, and chemicals. Doing so allows your cells to return to their original state of functioning.

Shadow Mountain Recovery offers detox from drugs and alcohol in a safe, supervised space. Trying to quit substance use alone isn’t a good idea. Going “cold turkey” can be extremely dangerous in some situations. In the case of some substances, you need a tapering-off protocol. Tapering off protects you from potentially deadly symptoms. Quitting some substances cold turkey can cause serious psychological symptoms like severe cravings.

Medically-assisted detox helps stabilize your brain chemistry as it finds its natural balance. While medically-assisted detox doesn’t eliminate withdrawal symptoms, it makes managing them easier. Most importantly, it keeps you or your loved one safe while their brain and body adapt to living without substances.

How long it takes the body to detox depends a lot on your unique situation. Depending on the amount of substances used and for how long, detox can take days, weeks, or even a month.

At Shadow Mountain Recovery, you can detox safely while beginning your individual treatment program with a behavioral health professional. That means you’re working on therapy related to addiction and any other mental health concerns you have while your body works to right itself.

Withdrawal symptoms vary, depending on the person and the type of substances they were using.

Symptoms may include:

  • Headaches and body aches
  • Insomnia and fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chills and fever
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Tremors
  • Muscle aches
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Cravings

Some symptoms are more serious and can even be life-threatening. Severe detox symptoms include:

  • Hallucinations
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Elevated heart rate and blood pressure

At Shadow Mountain Recovery, we make sure detox is as safe and comfortable as possible, including providing Medically-assisted detox, if necessary.

No, it isn’t safe to detox at home. Trying to quit substance use alone isn’t a good idea. In the case of alcohol and some opioids, it can cause death if detox isn’t handled properly. Tapering off protects you from potentially deadly symptoms.

At an inpatient or residential treatment program, you live at the center while you undergo daily treatment with qualified medical and mental health professionals. These programs are best for those who need ongoing, intensive treatment.

In outpatient treatment programs, you attend treatment, then return to your own home or a supportive living center until your next scheduled visit. This approach is best for people with supportive home environments and those needing to continue working during treatment.

What you take to addiction treatment depends on the center you choose and what they provide. At Shadow Mountain Recovery, we provide a list of what to bring to treatment to lessen the uncertainty and help you feel comfortable and prepared.

Everyone is unique and has different needs. So, the therapeutic approaches used in addiction treatment depend on those individual needs.

Addiction treatment is an effective way of helping you achieve sobriety. Despite the difficult nature of addiction, most people will recover if they seek care. Effective treatments from mental health experts can aid in the rehab process.

At Shadow Mountain Recovery, 90% of our clients across our centers successfully complete treatment, and every center has at least 85% successful completion.

Some insurance companies offer coverage for detox programs. But coverage may be limited to the number of days or to a maximum amount. If you have a copay or deductible that has not been met, you will likely be expected to pay a certain percentage yourself. Therefore, before signing up for a detox or rehab program, check with your insurance company about the coverage and get the specifics.

Shadow Mountain Recovery accepts all major insurance providers. We are affiliated with Aetna, BCBS, First Health Aetna, Multiplan, Presbyterian Health Plan, True Health, New Mexico Health Connections, and we usually collaborate with all PPO plans. We also will help you verify your insurance coverage

New Mexico residents also receive additional mental health coverage under Senate Bill 317. The bill requires most private insurance carriers in the state to cover the entire cost of addiction treatment through an in-network provider. The bill established the Health Care Affordability Fund and almost always places sanctions against copays and cost-sharing for covered individuals seeking treatment for behavioral health concerns.

The cost of treatment depends on your individual needs. The main factors that affect the cost of a rehab program include:

  • Treatment type
  • Treatment length
  • Amenities
  • Location
  • Needs of the client, such as detox services or treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Insurance type and coverage

Your recovery journey requires work and healthy choices even after treatment. The expert staff at Shadow Mountain Recovery will work with you to develop the best aftercare program for your needs.

Some aftercare programs last longer than others, and some require assistance finding housing, employment, and other treatment programs, such as a 12-step program or other support group. We will work with you to determine the best long-term recovery plan and help support you on that path.

The main goal of aftercare is to aid in your healing and recovery while avoiding a relapse. The longer someone stays in recovery, the more likely that person is to avoid relapsing. Therefore, aftercare is a vital part of the recovery process.

Recovery is a life-long commitment. The greatest risk following treatment is that the person won’t stay sober and in recovery. That’s why it’s vital that the person uncover and get treatment for the root cause of their addiction in recovery. It’s also essential that recovery teaches them how to cope with triggers and stressors when they return to their life. Finally, a strong aftercare program and support can help the person stay in recovery.

Watching a loved one with addiction is painful. The best way to help a loved one with addiction is to let them know what recovery options are available to them and help them understand what that treatment experience would be like.
