Shadow Mountain Albuquerque’s residential treatment program is a specially formulated program that provides a holistic alternative to a 12-step program. We’ve found that many patients that come to us have had negative and discouraging experiences in the past due to 12-step programs, because it just didn’t work for them. Shadow Mountain’s program is different. We emphasize on a holistic approach, with an intensive family focus, and evidence-based treatment models that build a foundation for a lifetime of freedom from addiction.
Our Treatment Philosophy
Here at Shadow Mountain Albuquerque, we believe that it is important to treat your addiction with a holistic approach, that incorporates care for your body, mind, spirit, and heart. Our proven therapeutic techniques primarily utilize evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy in order to correct harmful thought patterns. Our curriculum that we utilize include the SMART Recovery, which uses common sense procedures of self-help backed by science, and the Refuge Recovery program that is based on Buddhist principles.

Care Customized to Your Needs
Although we use the above modalities for all of our patients, it is a flexible foundation for your treatment plan. Every patient is different, and therefore we will create a modified plan specifically for you and your unique situation, needs, and challenges.
As you walk into the doors of Shadow Mountain Albuquerque, you will be met by our welcome team. They will give you a tour of the large facility, and help you familiarize yourself with everything to help you feel at home. To begin your admission process, we will take a thorough medical history to ensure we are able to provide you with the care that will be most helpful to you. This includes any medications, physical and mental health, and your history of substance use. Within those first 24 hours with us, you will sit down with a clinician for a consultation. During this, we will determine what your goals, objectives, and areas of focus should be while you are with us. Most of the treatment plans here at Shadow Mountain Albuquerque are based around a 30 day model, but we adjust this according to the needs of each individual patient.

Shadow Mountain is a unique place. It’s location in the middle of a canyon is matched to no other. The atmosphere is very unique (in a good way). The mentors do a excellent job at menotoring, and Kasey (runs the place) is very good at what she does. Every Friday you go to a meeting then go out to eat. On saturdays you either hike, or do team building excersises. On sundays in the winter everyone goes up to Taos Ski Valley and either hang out and play cards, snowboard, or ski. This provides a nice break from the day to day grind. I find myself missing the atmosphere at times. If you’re willing to put the work into you’re recovery this place will help you and give you the tools you need. Shadow Mountain provides family oriented counseling. For some people this is what they need, and for some it is not. I’m giving this place 4 stars. The reason why I’m not giving it 5 is because of one counselor I didn’t see eye to eye with, who was initially running the place when I first got there. She shouldn’t have been running the place. There was no reasoning with her. Thankfully the higher ups understood that as well and brought in Kasey. Once Kasey started running the place, I found myself enjoying every bit of it.Jon V.
If you want to change yourself and your life then Shadow Mountain Recovery in Taos, NM can work for you. My experience there didn't change everything but it put in motion a journey to happiness, fulfillment and sobriety that without the program I would not be on. Until going to Shadow Mountain I really thought I could handle my addiction on my own. This city boy realized, in the mountains of Taos, that he wasn't alone and there are people who want to help and can help. All you need is to be open to the process of healing, honesty, and positivity ("Go Deep"). It does require you to work and to be open but if you just put in a little effort you can find a new way, a new life, or just a new way of looking at the life you have now. I'd recommend treatment to anyone, addict or not. Life isn't always easy and reaching out for help can seem daunting, embarrassing, or weak but if you take the first step and choose a place like Shadow Mountain Recovery someone will definitely be there to guide you. Most importantly they'll be there to help you with every step after the most important step you chose for yourself. Addiction is a difficult and devastating disease but if you choose to take it on Shadow Mountain is a great place to start. Thanks to all the staff that helped me find my way and the new friends that will forever be a part of this journey. Choose sobriety, choose yourself, choose life.David Splawski
