Activity-Based Therapy

Shadow Mountain Recovery Activity-Based Therapy (ABT)

At Shadow Mountain Recovery, we understand how important activity-based recovery (ABT) is in the addiction recovery process. Activity-based therapy allows patients to explore themselves and the path to recovery on their own terms, which speeds up the process and helps to make recovery last a lifetime. This is why all of our locations provide a variety of ABT therapy options to all of our patients.

What Is ABT and How Does It Work?

Activity-based therapy is a method of therapy that involves the patient expressing and exploring themselves in ways that do not require words. Speaking one-on-one with a therapist is one form of self-expression and exploration, and ABT is another. Music, arts and crafts, sports and writing are all popular and effective forms of ABT. Patients are allowed and encouraged to find a creative outlet to help them in the process of recovery.

When someone is going through recovery, it is very natural for them to experience strong emotions. Anger, sadness, frustration, exhaustion and even aggression are all part of the recovery process. Addiction recovery is very mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting, and ABT serves as a healthy outlet for strong emotions. It allows recovering addicts the chance to express themselves and cope with the stress of recovery without the use of drugs or alcohol.
